We have used the summer break to relax and gather ideas for teaching and research. Currently, we are running the practical courses Natural Product Synthesis and Natural Product Biochemistry. However, we are also looking forward to the winter semester with the major modules such as Enzyme Technology I and Chemistry for Physicians.

In his research, Jan Gebauer was able to show that the halogenase PrnC can provide selective halogenation access to pyrroles.

Just before our retreat in Wermelskirchen, we had the pleasure of welcoming a new colleague. Jenna Surdzial from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona is currently supporting Nina Stadler in her project. Jenna came to us through the DAAD RISE Programme and will be joining our group until mid-August.

9th internal BioSC retreat with IBOC participation

Nikolai Huwa received his PhD on 'Biochemical characterisation of modular directing proteins' on 12 May 2023.

Our colleagues from the Schaffrath working group in Aachen left us with a Christmas present. On December 23, 2022, our joint study on Jacalin-Dirigent chimeras could be published in Plants. Such proteins produce resistance to plant pathogens in sweet grasses. In dicotyledonous plants, the domains are present as separate proteins. Thus, a total of 50 JRL proteins and 24 DIR proteins have been identified here. However, selected combinations do not yet indicate the same physiological function. A little late, but not less warmly, we would like to welcome our freshest colleagues Lisa Böhmer and Philipp Sowa. Lisa started her PhD in August and joins the methyltransferase team. In the Secondary Metabolism Enzymology group, Philipp has been working in the field of alkaloids since the end of September.
